My life Story

My name is Daniel A. K. L. Gomis, I’m married to Elisabeth and our children are Raïssa, Maïva, Sarah and Tabitha.

I was born in Dakar, capital of Senegal into a Roman Catholic family.  I was hungry for knowledge and by the age of fifteen had already read a number of works of classical literature.

By the time I was eighteen I began to smoke marijuana and became interested in reggae music.   My father’s death was the beginning of a period of debauchery, rejecting God, and rebellion.  I went to the University of Saint Louis (North of Senegal).  I studied English and developed a Rastafarian, philosophical, and revolutionary lifestyle.  Many influences and questions brought me to the decision to reject my faith and convert to Islam.

I went to the home of my maternal grandfather, who was a Muslim and lived in Saint Louis, in order to inform him of my decision to convert to Islam and after questioning me he advised that I should reflect on it.  When I returned to my room, I took the French translation of the Koran and said to God, “If Jesus is really the son of God, I want you to prove it to me.”  I spent many days reading; all the passages in the Koran that speak of Issa (Jesus).  One day I found a  passage which said, “All those who follow him (Jesus) are set above those who have not believed in Him” (Surah 3:55).  I was moved deeply and I asked myself many questions.

From there, I started to experience what Jesus said in John 8:32: ‘You shall know the truth;, and the truth shall set you free.”  I had been delivered from the mystical practices, beliefs (such as charms, soothsayer, and marabouts), and superstition.  God continues to work in my life as I serve him.

I have seven years of experience working for a regional airlines followed by employment with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).  In 2002, I became the Francophone literature coordinator for West-Africa Field and French Equatorial Field. I am currently serving as the pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene in Dakar, Senegal.
