Making a Difference

Aids Free Generation Club

Story by Rev. John Watton,  Coordinator for Compassionate Ministries AWF

At first I was surprised! The members of the AIDS FREE GENERATION CLUB in North Central Liberia were much younger than I expected.  As they sang, danced and performed recitations relating to their goal of becoming an AIDS free generation in Liberia, I was struck by the fact that most of these Liberian children were not yet out of primary school. As I begin to think about it though, if the upcoming generations are to be successfully AIDS free, they are certainly going to have to start spreading the word while this generation is very young.

I applaud this club; I commend them and encourage them! Their club has been functioning for three years now and is officially registered with the Government of Liberia. Active across our Church of the Nazarene Liberia Central District, it already boasts a membership of some thirteen hundred children from sixteen schools with twenty three volunteer staff.

More than a dozen of the children are in leadership training and already are regular presenters on a weekly radio program entitled AIDS FREE GENERATION ON AIR. Through their thirty minute program, they reach their radio audience in five different languages with a holistic message of HIV/AIDS prevention. This club is catching the attention of many people living in Central Liberia including the Member of Parliament for the area. This club has caught my attention!

May the Lord strengthen and equip them to raise up an AIDS free generation!
